Crown lengthening can help improve the health of gum tissue or may be used in preparation for restorative or cosmetic dental procedures, for example prior to crowning teeth. Some people have what is known as a “gummy smile” where teeth are covered up with too much gum tissue so they appear shorter than they really are. The most common reasons for crown lengthening include:
- Restoring damaged teeth. Trauma and decay can result in teeth breaking off just beneath the gum line, and crown lengthening can be used in preparation for new restorations to repair these teeth.
- Too much gum tissue can make teeth look unnaturally short and may increase the risk of developing gum disease. Removing the excess gum tissue can give a more balanced, healthy and aesthetically pleasing appearance to teeth.
- Crown lengthening helps provide more space between a dental crown and the jawbone, preventing damage to the jawbone and surrounding gum tissue once it is placed.
What Is the Procedure for Crown Lengthening?
This procedure can be carried out at Swansea Dental Practice and involves cutting away excess gum tissue to help re-contour the gums. Afterwards the gums are stitched back into place and are left to heal. Teeth will look noticeably longer after treatment but it can take several weeks for the gums to settle down.
