Who needs orthodontic treatment?
You might need orthodontic treatment if your teeth or jaws don’t develop or align normally, or if your teeth don’t meet when you chew. In some cases, this misalignment can affect your facial profile, impacting your self-confidence and self-esteem.
However, you don’t have to have extensive problems with your bite to benefit from braces.
These days, orthodontics can also be used to reposition a few teeth using what are called “cosmetic braces” which focus on only moving teeth visible when smiling and talking.
What kind of orthodontic treatments are available and how will they improve my smile?
Orthodontic appliances can be fixed or removable, depending on your unique needs and requirements.
Fixed orthodontic appliances are often called braces. Braces can straighten teeth and help to improve your appearance, but not everyone is aware of the benefits braces can offer dental health.
Braces and other orthodontic appliances can be used to correct the appearance, position, and function of misaligned teeth. This can make it easier to brush and floss your teeth, reducing the risk of problems such as tooth decay and gum disease.
The forces created during biting and chewing will be distributed more evenly among correctly aligned teeth, so there is less chance of one or more teeth becoming broken or fractured due to too much stress being placed on them.
Orthodontics also helps reduce the risk of wear and tear to your temporomandibular joints which are the joints responsible for moving your lower jaw.
Problems with these joints can result in a disorder called TMJ.
Orthodontic treatment for kids
It is recommended children have an orthodontic evaluation by age six or seven – possibly even sooner.
Orthodontic treatment in childhood can help correct problems that would otherwise require more extensive treatment later in life. We take advantage of growth spurts at this age and help correct problems caused by thumb sucking or other oral habits, or we can provide appliances to help break these habits.
Orthodontic treatment for adults
In the past, orthodontics were used for children and teenagers alone – but now it is becoming far more common for adults to wear braces!
Fixed braces are still popular in orthodontics because we can use clear or ceramic brackets and tooth coloured whiles to blend the braces into your natural smile. Fixed braces are also more cost-effective than other orthodontic alternatives.
However, we also offer removable braces called Invisalign. A nearly invisible form of orthodontic treatment, Invisalign uses plastic aligners that can be taken out for eating and teeth cleaning. These clear, removable braces are an option for teenagers and adults who feel uncomfortable about fixed/traditional braces.
