Root Canal Treatment

Professional root canal treatment with minimal discomfort available in Swansea.

Damaged or decayed teeth can enable bacteria to penetrate and infect the central part of the tooth which is called the pulp. This part of the tooth contains nerves and blood vessels which extend right down into the root canals in the roots of the teeth. Root canal treatment eliminates the infection before the tooth is restored with a filling or crown. Common symptoms of an infected tooth include:

  • Toothache or pain when biting or chewing on the tooth
  • Swollen gums around the infected tooth
  • The gum tissue might look red or will feel tender to touch
  • A pimple may develop on the gum tissue

If you think your tooth might be infected, contact Swansea Dental Practice as soon as possible as the chances of saving the tooth increases with prompt treatment.

What Happens during a Root Canal Treatment?

We will take dental x-rays to identify the extent of the infection and to plan treatment. The tooth will be numbed before your dentist accesses the pulp through the crown of the tooth. Next, the pulp tissue will be removed and all your root canals will be cleaned out. The empty pulp chamber is disinfected before being permanently sealed. The tooth can be restored with either a filling or a crown. Root canal treatment is often highly successful at saving badly infected teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

Our practices are equipped with the latest rotary instruments and high tech alloy files to produce the best possible success rates for this treatment type. Our practitioners spend more time in ongoing education on root canal treatment than any other dental treatment. It is an area which is undergoing rapid technological change and we have strived to keep abreast of these changes.
